President Donald Trump asserted that U.S. energy companies were earning hundreds of billions during the Iran conflict as national gasoline and diesel averages stood at $4.2858 and $6.3492 per gallon, respectively, on Oct. 26.

At a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, on Oct. 24, Trump linked the claim to oil headed for Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. “We’re making a freaking fortune,” he said. Trump gave no calculation or time period for the amount. He also did not identify which businesses received it or how much, if any, went to the federal government.

Regular gasoline averaged $2.98 per gallon on Feb. 26, compared with $4.2858 on Oct. 26. The national daily diesel average on Oct. 26 was $6.3492 per gallon.

The latest remarks followed Trump’s earlier comments on Iran and oil prices.
