OCC Finalizes First GENIUS Act Rule, Effective Jan. 18, 2027
The rule covers reserves, redemptions, custody and supervision.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has finalized its first rule under the GENIUS Act, with the federal framework taking effect Jan. 18, 2027.
The rule covers digital asset custody as well as reserves, redemptions and supervision. It establishes an oversight structure for those areas and marks the first completed regulatory measure under the act. The framework gives entities involved in digital asset custody a defined set of requirements. It is intended to strengthen trust and compliance in the digital asset industry.
The Digital Chamber announced completion of the rule. The group advocates for effective regulatory frameworks in digital assets and participates in rulemaking initiatives.
The OCC oversees national banks and federal savings associations. Its role allows it to set standards governing how financial institutions handle digital assets, placing the rule within the U.S. banking oversight system. The agency's supervision is aimed at ensuring institutions meet established custody and oversight standards.
