Malaysian customs seized 30 AI-equipped server units in a shipment valued at about $12.1 million (RM49.5 million) after officers found it had been declared as ordinary electronics before a planned re-export.

Officers intercepted the cargo Oct. 15 in the free trade zone at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Authorities announced the seizure Oct. 28.

Aspalila Ag Tuah, the airport's customs director, said the servers were destined for re-export to another Asian country. She said the goods were routed through Malaysia to avoid restrictions on export to their next destination. A permit is required for the onward shipment under Malaysia's Strategic Trade Act 2010.

Customs officials linked the case to a suspected smuggling syndicate. Officials said at least five cases had been tied to the group.

In June 2026, airport officers seized 72 server units in a case involving similar declarations. That shipment was valued at $12.93 million.

A Malaysian company that helped facilitate the latest shipment has been called in to assist with the investigation. Officials have not named the company or the destination, which they have described only as another Asian country. The investigation is ongoing.
