The Oct. 6 message urged investors to question online investment tips, unsolicited pitches and claims that promise large gains with little risk.

The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) also warned that artificial intelligence can be used to create misleading investment content. Investors considering a crypto trading platform were advised to check whether it is registered with a Canadian securities regulator. The registration guidance applies to Canada.

In a separate Aug. 4 alert, the CSA warned that fraudsters were impersonating Union Bancaire Privée, UBP SA. They approached Canadians who had lost crypto-related funds and sought upfront fees to recover the money. UBP said it had no connection to the activity.

The CSA brings together securities regulators from Canada’s provinces and territories to coordinate capital markets regulation. Its platform-registration advice is specific to Canada.
