The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the Philippines’ central bank, urged wider use of detailed statistics to guide policy and resource allocation, including in tourism and local enterprise.

Officials made the case at the BSP’s Manila headquarters on Oct. 28, during a ceremony closing the 37th National Statistics Month. The event focused on statistics’ role in making tourism inclusive, resilient and sustainable.

“Timely, detailed, and credible data strengthen industry growth and the economy. They tell us where we are now and where we could be heading,” BSP Assistant Governor Rogelio V. Mercado Jr. said at the ceremony.

Mercado said the BSP uses economic statistics when formulating monetary policy and supporting sustainable development across industries.

The BSP has partnered with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) on National Statistics Month initiatives since 2001, with the aim of making public economic figures easier to access and more reliable. Presidential Proclamation No. 647, signed Sept. 20, 1990, establishes the observance each October.
