The investigation covers Muhos alone, while an earlier stop-work order also applied to a planned site in Kajaani.

In Muhos, police are investigating suspected environmental damage linked to drainage and water management during preparations for a data center planned by Tuike Finland Oy. The police inquiry covers Muhos, one location in Google’s wider Finnish infrastructure program.

LVV requested an investigation, and Oulu police opened the preliminary case during the week of Oct. 26. Police will handle five investigation requests concerning the Muhos site together. They expect to provide an update in December 2026 and aim to complete the investigation in 2027. The inquiry is preliminary, and no finding of wrongdoing has been announced.

An earlier regulatory order applied to planned sites in both Muhos and Kajaani. On Oct. 6, LVV directed Tuike to suspend environmentally significant preparatory work at both locations until environmental impact assessments were complete. Preparatory work had stopped at both sites by Oct. 14.

Tuike planned about nine kilometers of drainage ditches, most of which had already been built. Monitoring results showed changes suggesting acidification. LVV concluded that ditching at the Muhos site required a water permit.

Google’s announced Finnish infrastructure program covers 2027 and 2028 and includes projects and partnerships in Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala. It also includes clean-energy projects and local partnerships. Google lists Tuike Finland Oy as a data center operations provider in Finland. TokenPost previously covered the environmental review of Google’s Finnish data-center expansion.

LVV set Nov. 5, 2026, as Tuike’s deadline to submit a detailed water-management plan for Muhos. The plan must describe proposed structures, provide a schedule and include independent water monitoring. It must also address risks from heavy rain, snowmelt and acidic black shale soils.
