U.S. Crypto Rules Debate Sharpens Before Election

Republicans are pressing the CLARITY Act, while Democrats say it would not have prevented the reported breach. The measure failed a Senate cloture vote in September.

A reported $6.3 billion breach at Binance has sharpened Washington's argument over crypto oversight, with Republicans using the incident to press for legislation days before the Nov. 3 election.

Republicans have tied the breach to what they describe as the lack of a statutory framework for cryptocurrency exchanges and are pushing the CLARITY Act. Democrats favor stronger oversight but argue that the legislation would not have prevented the attack. The disagreement puts two questions at the center of the debate: whether federal rules for exchanges are sufficient and whether the pending bill would address the security risk raised by this incident.

The CLARITY Act failed a Senate cloture vote in September, leaving the measure short of the support needed to advance at that point. The latest debate has renewed attention on legislation affecting the crypto industry.

Voters head to the polls Nov. 3, days after the Senate's September setback for the measure. The election could influence which crypto policy priorities lawmakers pursue and the bill's prospects for future Senate consideration.
