Planned Gelephu Central Bank Cleared to Hold Bitcoin and Crypto
The new Bhutanese bank may invest in digital assets alongside traditional reserves.

Bhutan’s planned Gelephu Central Bank has been cleared to hold Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies, giving digital assets a place in the investment mandate of the new institution for the country’s planned financial hub. The bank will be allowed to invest in crypto alongside traditional reserves as part of its investment remit.
Bitcoin is the specifically named asset, while the authorization also covers cryptocurrencies more broadly. The arrangement permits digital assets as an addition to traditional reserve holdings. It describes crypto and conventional reserves as parallel parts of the bank’s investment options, with no indication that one replaces the other.
The allowance formalizes a digital-asset role for the planned Bhutanese financial hub. Gelephu’s new central bank is the institution covered by the permission, and its investments may include cryptocurrencies alongside traditional reserve assets. Bitcoin is named within that wider category, making the planned bank’s reserve policy relevant to both BTC and other cryptocurrencies.
