Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK), Indonesia’s financial services regulator, plans a road map for shariah-compliant digital assets to strengthen the country’s Islamic finance ecosystem and its contribution to the national economy.

At the Indonesia Islamic Finance Summit 2026, OJK outlined a gradual strategy for developing the assets. Adi Budiarso, the regulator’s Executive Head of Financial Technology and Digital Assets, announced OJK’s commitment to promote their development.

The strategy calls for incorporating shariah principles into products from the design stage. OJK also is promoting community-based financial protection programs. The initiative aims to build public trust and increase digital assets’ contribution to Indonesia’s economy.

The regulator’s role in financial oversight is separate from religious rulings on permissibility. MUI’s 2021 ruling on crypto trading permits trading only for an asset that qualifies as sil’ah, has an underlying basis and provides clear benefit.
