Democrat Sherrod Brown won Ohio’s U.S. Senate seat, defeating Republican Jon Husted in a result that flips a closely watched seat and could affect the chamber’s balance and federal crypto policy.

The victory gives Democrats a pickup in the Senate and returns the seat to Brown after his 2024 loss. A change in party control of one seat can shape the chamber’s balance as lawmakers consider federal digital-asset policy, one of the broader stakes attached to the race.

Fairshake and Digital Freedom Fund spent a combined $63 million opposing Brown over the past two months. That figure tops the roughly $40 million the groups spent in 2024, when Brown lost his Senate seat. The latest spending against Brown exceeded the groups’ prior effort.

Husted, a crypto-supporting Republican, faced Brown, the Democrat, in a race with implications beyond Ohio. Its outcome puts a party-changing Senate seat among the stakes in the debate over federal crypto policy.
