Democrats were projected to take control of the U.S. House after Tuesday’s 2026 midterm elections, while the Senate contest remained close, leaving the upper chamber unsettled. Results had been counted in 247 of the House’s 435 seats: Democrats had won 152, and Republicans 95.

Democrats led by 57 seats among the House races counted. Results from the other 188 seats were outside that tally.

Democrats held 50 Senate seats when seats not on the ballot were included. The Senate contest remained close, and the results provided no final outcome for the chamber.

The House and Senate are the two chambers of Congress. The projected House result and unresolved Senate contest leave control of Congress unsettled pending the Senate outcome.
