Democrats won majorities in both the U.S. House and Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, taking control of Congress and shifting the political backdrop for crypto regulation, federal spending and the dollar.

The party gained Senate seats previously held by Republicans in Maine, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Texas, South Carolina and North Carolina, while keeping its seats in Georgia and New Hampshire. The gains spanned the Midwest and South, including Texas and both Carolinas. The House result also gave Democrats control of that chamber, completing the party’s takeover of Congress.

Democratic candidates also won gubernatorial races in Ohio, Iowa, Georgia and Texas, adding victories in four states to the party’s congressional gains.

Trump said he would have won by a wide margin if he had been on the ballot. He also said the Iran war contributed in part to Republican losses, but said he did not regret starting the conflict.

For crypto markets, the change shifts the congressional backdrop for debates over regulation, federal spending and the dollar as Democrats take control of both chambers.
