Democrats won sweeping election victories across the United States, gaining room to steer both chambers of Congress and the ability to investigate President Donald Trump, adding uncertainty to Washington's next two years.

Democratic wins spanned red and blue states and races at multiple levels. Some districts produced margins that set historical records.

Republicans who remain are more supportive of Trump and less likely to challenge him. Moderate Trump critics had already been eliminated before Election Day, leaving the party to face the next two years under an unpopular president.

Democrats also have enough seats to steer the House and Senate agendas and pursue investigations of Trump, his family and supporters. Their own party brand remains unpopular, setting up an internal debate in coming months over its political direction as it tries to rebuild public support.

The shift adds uncertainty for U.S. markets as congressional attention turns toward oversight and Democratic priorities.
