After Republican losses in the midterm elections, Rep. Thomas Massie plans to seek a House vote next week on impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over his role in the Iran war.

Massie, a Kentucky Republican, plans to initiate the vote when Congress reconvenes. Several Republicans expect the measure to pass. Some Republican lawmakers have accused Hegseth of overstating the chances of a quick victory and pressing for escalation despite no sign Iran would surrender. They say the conflict has become a quagmire, contributed to higher prices and fueled voter backlash.

Republican lawmakers and allies have blamed Hegseth for persuading President Trump to attack Iran without a clear exit strategy, while many have avoided directly blaming Trump. Trump said Wednesday he had no plans to fire Hegseth, praised his performance and said he would make the same decision to go to war again. Vice President Vance said Wednesday the war was why Republicans lost, without naming anyone responsible.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Hegseth remains committed to leading the department through the end of Trump’s term and will not be deterred by what Parnell called false investigations. Massie plans to start the impeachment vote when Congress returns next week.
