Samsung Executive Says Won Stablecoin Could Enter Wallet If Issued
Park Hyun-soo named no issuer or launch date. South Korea’s tokenized-securities rules are scheduled to take effect Feb. 4, 2027, while stablecoin-linked payments depend on separate legislation.

A Samsung Global Research executive said a Korean won stablecoin could eventually be supported in Samsung Wallet if issued, tying a possible consumer use to South Korea’s digital-asset rules.
At a policy seminar in Seoul on Nov. 5, Park Hyun-soo described a possible domestic use for the wallet. He named no issuer and gave no date for a Korean feature, so his remarks did not announce a service or launch plan.
Samsung Electronics America’s Oct. 7, 2026, announcement introduced USDC support for its U.S. wallet service. The U.S. service gives eligible Galaxy users access to a stablecoin through Samsung Wallet and lets them transfer funds to qualifying bank accounts in more than 60 countries. Stablecoins are designed to maintain a stable value; the possible Korean asset would be denominated in won, while the U.S. service uses USDC.
Samsung’s figure of 82 million refers to compatible U.S. Galaxy devices, not confirmed users. Bastion provides wallet and transfer infrastructure, while Coinbase provides custody for USDC. Costs vary by destination and amount.
Details of the Samsung U.S. USDC plan provide a comparison for Park’s remarks, but they do not confirm a Korean product or establish that it would use USDC or the same partners.
Park also raised stablecoins as a possible way to settle transactions involving tokenized securities. He warned that a shift from bank deposits into stablecoins could constrain lending, and flagged possible effects on monetary policy and competition. He also raised the prospect of higher costs when identity checks and anti-money-laundering requirements apply.
South Korea’s Financial Services Commission (FSC), the country’s financial regulator, has scheduled tokenized-securities rules to take effect Feb. 4, 2027. The FSC places stablecoin-linked on-chain payments in a later phase that depends on separate legislation. The Feb. 4 date is the next scheduled regulatory milestone, but it does not set a timetable for issuing a won stablecoin or adding one to Samsung Wallet.
