U.S. Regulators Contact Banks After $6.3 Billion Binance Hack
Banks are checking for unusual activity and service disruptions. A major U.S. bank has contacted Binance and begun an internal review.
The Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) began contacting banks Monday to ask about unusual system activity or service disruptions after a $6.3 billion hack targeted Binance. The regulators are checking whether the crypto-market incident poses a risk of spillover into the traditional financial system.
Several banks are conducting internal security reviews and assessing whether weaknesses could be exploited using similar attack methods. A cybersecurity team at one large U.S. bank has contacted Binance and begun an internal report that may guide further system reviews and security updates. The inquiry is aimed at identifying weak points in bank defenses that could face similar methods.
Binance said it is in close contact with regulators worldwide and is providing updates on the incident. The Federal Reserve and OCC declined to comment. Banks are also devoting substantial resources to reviewing and patching cybersecurity code as rapid advances in AI models make cyber defense more difficult.
