Ryan James Roach, 35, was extradited to the United States on Oct. 28, where a federal grand jury indicted him in an alleged scheme to mine cryptocurrency using educational institutions’ computers.

The indictment also names Canadian national Mathiew James Stubbings. It alleges the men targeted U.S. institutions from June 2016 through December 2019, using servers registered under false names in several countries to spread malware and mining software and store stolen login credentials.

The targeted institutions were in New York, Tennessee, North Carolina and Massachusetts. The indictment alleges the scheme damaged at least 10 protected computers over a one-year period and caused at least $5,000 in losses.

The charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Stubbings’ extradition proceedings are continuing in Canada.
