Scaramucci Says Trump’s Crypto Ventures Eroded Democratic Support for CLARITY Act

He cited pre-inauguration meme coin launches and a dispute over ethics restrictions as factors in the bill’s stalled bipartisan push.

SkyBridge Capital founder Anthony Scaramucci said President Donald Trump’s crypto businesses and meme coin launches helped cost the CLARITY Act Democratic backing, weakening the bill’s bipartisan path.

Scaramucci said the coins launched before Trump took office in January 2025 and contributed to resistance from Democrats. He also pointed to a dispute over ethics provisions: lawmakers wanted tighter restrictions on government officials’ crypto interests, while the White House opposed signing those provisions. Scaramucci said both sides were responsible for talks stalling.

The House passed the bill in 2025. A Senate procedural motion to advance it on Sept. 15 drew 49 votes in favor and 50 against, below the 60 votes required. The measure is intended to create a federal regulatory framework for digital assets.

Scaramucci had previously called Trump’s memecoin the “singular reason” crypto rules failed.
