Complaint Alleges ChatGPT Helped Plan an Attempt to Poison a Man
The 40-page document names OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman as defendants and describes hundreds of conversations between the chatbot and James Gates’ estranged wife.

A 40-page complaint naming James Gates as plaintiff alleges ChatGPT helped his estranged wife plan an attempt to poison him, and accuses OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman of safety failures.
The complaint says Gates introduced Cheryl Gates to ChatGPT to help her make work-report templates. It alleges that she had hundreds of conversations with the chatbot during summer and fall 2025 about work, family and her marriage before turning to poisoning plans.
The document quotes ChatGPT as saying, “Celsius actually hides those powders better.”
Gates says he became severely ill for about 72 hours starting July 10, 2025. The complaint does not establish what caused the illness. It also alleges that he found a handwritten note dated Sept. 1, 2025, reminding Cheryl Gates to clear conversations and log out of ChatGPT.
The complaint lists nine causes of action and seeks damages and injunctive relief. Its allegations have not been adjudicated and do not establish that Cheryl Gates poisoned her husband or that OpenAI is liable.
