Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) planned to announce market-stabilization measures Friday afternoon in Taiwan, after Premier 卓榮泰 directed the regulator to respond to volatility in domestic and global stock markets.

FSC Chairman 彭金隆 said the agency would hold a special meeting on Friday’s trading and disclose measures afterward. The plan did not specify what steps the FSC would take, and short-selling restrictions had not been confirmed.

Taiwan’s benchmark stock index fell to 37,837.05, down 3,737.67 points in its largest intraday point loss on record. By about 9:50 p.m. ET Thursday (02:50 UTC Friday), it had recovered above 40,000 and was down about 3.1% from its prior close. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 5.76% at that same observation time.

The FSC’s temporary rules in April 2025 lowered daily securities-borrowing sale limits and raised minimum margin requirements for short positions. The regulator had not said whether it would use either measure again.
