Greece’s Parliament approved a tax framework that applies a 10% levy to an investor’s entire annual net crypto gain once it tops €500, while the treatment of token swaps remains unresolved.

The measure is set to take effect Jan. 1, 2027. Income from staking, crypto lending and providing liquidity to decentralized finance (DeFi) pools will be taxed separately at 15%.

Parliament’s scientific service flagged language covering asset disposals for consideration as potentially broad enough to include exchanges of one cryptocurrency for another. It recommended explicitly exempting those swaps and setting clearer rules for trades involving stablecoins and electronic money tokens.

The government has previously said crypto swaps should not trigger capital gains tax, leaving the law’s practical reach unsettled. Finance Ministry officials plan to publish guidance on transaction transparency and tax audits in the coming weeks.

The government has not estimated how much revenue the tax may bring in, saying the market is difficult to measure because many Greek investors use trading platforms based abroad.
