Solana Schedules Alpenglow Testnet and Devnet Activation for Q3 2026
The upgrade targets a reduction in finality from about 12.8 seconds to roughly 150 milliseconds while leaving applications, fees and transaction formats unchanged.

Solana has scheduled its Alpenglow consensus upgrade for testnet and devnet activation in the third quarter of 2026, targeting faster transaction finality while preserving the network’s existing application environment.
Alpenglow is planned as a replacement for TowerBFT, Solana’s current consensus system. The upgrade targets finality of roughly 150 milliseconds, compared with about 12.8 seconds under TowerBFT.
Mainnet activation is tied to Anza’s v4.3 release schedule. The testnet stage remains separate from activation on Solana’s production network.
The first phase, Votor, is designed to replace on-chain vote transactions with direct validator votes and aggregated certificates. A later phase, Rotor, is planned to replace Turbine’s system for distributing blocks across the network.
The changes do not affect the Solana Virtual Machine, transaction formats, programs, fees or account model. Applications that send transactions and read account data are not expected to require changes. Validators, indexers and other infrastructure connected to consensus or block data may need to adapt.
Cluster operators can check the consensus state with the getAgGenesisCert RPC method or the solana alpenglow-genesis-info command. Before migration, the query produces a null result; once Alpenglow is active, it provides the cluster’s genesis certificate.
Solana (SOL) opened at $117.38 on Sept. 23 and reached a daily high of $119.73. It closed at $117.39 after falling to a low of $116.72. Solana’s market capitalization was listed at $69.62 billion, while trading volume reached $4.68 billion.
The planned testnet phase is not established as the cause of SOL’s price move. The next defined milestones are the scheduled testnet and devnet activation in the third quarter, followed by later deployment steps connected to the mainnet release schedule.
