Musk Says SpaceX Could Reach AI Pole Position in Six Months
Musk said SpaceX’s AI model could match Anthropic’s Fable or OpenAI’s GPT-6 in two to three months if its development pace continues to accelerate.
Elon Musk said SpaceX’s artificial intelligence model could match Anthropic’s Fable or OpenAI’s GPT-6 within two to three months, with the company potentially reaching the industry’s “pole position” in about six months.
Musk said Sept. 24 that SpaceX’s AI work is three years old, compared with six years for Anthropic and 10 years for OpenAI. He tied the timeline to whether SpaceX can maintain the pace at which its development is accelerating.
“We will keep accelerating,” Musk wrote. “Our AI efforts are only 3 years old, vs 6 and 10 years old for Anthropic and OpenAI. If our second derivative remains strong, SpaceX will reach pole position in about 6 months.”
Musk pointed to infrastructure deployment as a potential advantage for SpaceX. He acknowledged that bringing large-scale computing capacity online is difficult but said hardware is an area where SpaceX has demonstrated strength.
He also argued that exceeding the intelligence required for a particular task is unnecessary or inappropriate. Musk used a toaster as an example, saying there is no need to put Newton-level intelligence into one and that it should not be done.
The comments came as preparations were underway for a White House AI banquet involving President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping and technology executives including Jeff Bezos, Jensen Huang and Sam Altman.
Musk’s forecast sets timelines for SpaceX’s AI ambitions but does not describe a completed model benchmark or industry ranking. The six-month estimate depends on the company maintaining its current rate of improvement.
