xAI’s Colossus 2 Could Reach 1.21 Million Chips by Year-End
The cluster currently has 550,000 GB200 and GB300 chips, with as many as 660,000 additional GB300 chips potentially coming online.
xAI’s Colossus 2 artificial intelligence cluster could reach about 1.21 million chips by year-end, an increase of about 120% from its current total.
Colossus 2 currently has 110,000 GB200 chips and 440,000 GB300 chips, giving it 550,000 chips in total. The cluster could bring 220,000 additional GB300 chips online next week, followed by another 220,000 in November.
If progress goes smoothly, a further 220,000 GB300 chips could come online by year-end. That would bring the potential increase to as many as 660,000 chips and the cluster’s total to about 1.21 million.
The expansion would make GB300 chips the sole source of the potential additions. The timing remains conditional, with the final year-end total dependent on whether each planned deployment proceeds as described.
Separately, Colossus 1 currently has 150,000 H100 chips, 50,000 H200 chips and 30,000 GB200 chips. Both clusters are part of xAI’s computing infrastructure in the Memphis area.
