Saachi Jain, OpenAI’s head of safety systems, said Astra improved problems associated with “model laziness” but remained below the standard required for release. The model also struggled to consistently follow task boundaries and authorization requirements and to accurately explain work it had completed.
The cancellation delays the planned integration of Astra into ChatGPT and Codex. The company’s next step is to continue testing and address the safety issues before setting a new launch schedule.
