UK AI Minister Narayan Urges Faster Data-Center Construction
The government is promoting a plan worth up to $136 billion to build sovereign-level AI computing capacity while giving communities a role in development.
The United Kingdom must accelerate data-center construction to develop sovereign-level artificial intelligence computing capacity, AI Minister Narayan said Sept. 29, as the government promotes a plan worth up to $136 billion.
Political leaders have argued that expanding domestic data-center capacity would reduce the UK’s reliance on other countries for AI infrastructure. The plan is aimed at increasing the computing resources available within the country rather than relying as heavily on overseas facilities.
Narayan said expanding data-center capacity gives the public a clear reason to support the effort. Narayan also acknowledged that society remains concerned about the risks associated with AI.
Maintaining public backing will require data-center development to remain manageable, Narayan said. That includes avoiding excessive construction, ensuring local communities have a voice and delivering tangible benefits through measures such as clean-energy investment.
The UK’s policy push comes as AI infrastructure spending expands globally. Capital spending on AI infrastructure is projected at about $1.3 trillion in 2027 and $2 trillion in 2028, while new data-center deployments are expected to reach 35 gigawatts in 2027 and 57 gigawatts in 2028.
