Cloudflare Launches Closed Beta for Stablecoin Payments to AI Agents
The Monetization Gateway lets eligible U.S. businesses charge agents in USD Coin, with payments settling on Base through Coinbase’s x402 standard.
Cloudflare has launched a closed beta for a payment system that lets eligible U.S. businesses charge artificial intelligence agents in USD Coin (USDC) as they access online services.
The Monetization Gateway allows websites to set prices for information or services. Cloudflare presents the price to an agent and grants access once payment clears, allowing services to charge agents without requiring card entry or monthly subscriptions.
The system uses Coinbase’s x402 payment standard to verify transactions. USDC payments settle on Base, Coinbase’s blockchain network.
The gateway is part of Cloudflare’s broader effort to support payments between websites and AI agents. The company rolled out cloudflare.pay in August, allowing agents to verify that they are acting for a user and spend from a linked wallet.
Cloudflare plans to expand features and users through the rest of the year, with wider availability targeted for early 2027.
The company has also explored blockchain infrastructure for stablecoin micropayments and whether to launch its own blockchain. Its earlier blockchain work examined how payment systems could use additional blockchain capacity.
Circle, Stripe and Tempo have announced products designed to let AI agents hold funds or make payments. Visa and Mastercard have also introduced tools for agent-driven purchases. Mastercard’s program operates within limits set by users.
