DogeOS Opens Public Testnet to Add Smart Contracts Around Dogecoin

The EVM-compatible network uses test DOGE for fees, targets about 300 transactions per second and gives developers a venue to test applications before a possible mainnet launch.

DogeOS opened its public testnet Sept. 30, adding an EVM-compatible application layer around Dogecoin (DOGE) so developers can test smart-contract applications without altering the base network.

The Chikyū Testnet launched at 10 a.m. ET (14:00 UTC). DOGE is used to pay transaction fees, and the network has chain ID 6281971.

The network can process approximately 300 transactions per second, compared with about 30 transactions per second on Dogecoin’s Layer 1. Blocks are produced roughly every three seconds on Chikyū, while the base network takes about one minute.

Developers can deploy smart contracts with familiar Ethereum development tools, including Hardhat and Foundry. The testnet allows teams to build and test applications with test DOGE before any mainnet version using real funds.

The planned applications span trading, lending, stablecoins, gaming and consumer services. Named projects include Barkswap, Superposition Finance, Derps, Split Markets, USDoge, Snag, Anoncoin, Starbase, Doge Escape, PlaysOut and DogeFundMe. Their availability and features will depend on each team’s development schedule.

“Today marks the beginning of Dogecoin’s evolution from asset to ecosystem,” said Jordan Jefferson, founder and CEO of DogeOS.

The application layer is intended to provide smart-contract functionality and Ethereum-compatible development workflows while keeping Dogecoin’s Layer 1 unchanged.

“L1 ledger purity must stay intact while we introduce utility one layer above,” said Timothy Stebbing, director of the Dogecoin Foundation.

The network remains a test environment, and no date has been announced for a mainnet launch.
