Microsoft’s official X account was compromised Oct. 1 and used to promote a token linked to its Clippy character and stock ticker, putting the promotion in front of more than 13 million followers.

Microsoft secured the account and removed the unauthorized posts. The account reposted the Clippy impersonator’s content, followed that account and displayed a different profile picture.

Microsoft did not authorize or endorse any token associated with Clippy, Microsoft or $MSFT. Microsoft plans legal action to remove the token and related materials.

In June 2024, scammers took over Microsoft India’s X account and posed as meme-stock trader Keith Gill.
