More than 10 million x402 payments had been settled through t54’s facilitator on the XRP Ledger by Oct. 1, marking a rapid rise in use of a system designed to let software pay for online services.

The count grew from 1 million in less than three months. The seven-day average was above 500,000 payments per day through Oct. 1. These figures describe payments handled through t54’s facilitator, not a total for every x402 payment or transaction on the XRP Ledger.

The count does not show the dollar value transferred or the number of distinct buyers. It also does not establish whether every payment was initiated autonomously by an AI agent.

x402 uses HTTP’s “402 Payment Required” response to communicate that a resource requires payment. A client can submit payment information and retry its request, while a facilitator can verify and settle the payment. The design is intended to let software pay for digital services such as application programming interfaces and computing.

Ripple announced its XRPL AI Starter Kit on June 9, 2026, with support for x402 payments on the XRP Ledger using XRP or Ripple USD (RLUSD). The tools are intended for developers building applications in which software agents pay for APIs, computing and other services.
