Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin described blockchain systems evolving beyond transaction records, with on-chain and off-chain computation and cryptography helping verify work and determine what information participants can see.

Speaking at the 12th Global Blockchain Summit in Shanghai, Buterin also argued that artificial intelligence could help researchers develop and check more complex cryptographic systems.

Two draft Ethereum proposals address parts of that technical direction. EIP-8288, co-authored by Buterin and Thomas Coratger, would let transactions declare cryptographic dependencies that mempool participants could aggregate off-chain into a recursive STARK. A block would then carry a proof covering those dependencies. The proposal is marked Draft and says activation would require a network upgrade.

FOCIL, short for Fork-choice Enforced Inclusion Lists, focuses on transaction inclusion. Its draft design calls for a 16-member validator committee to publish lists of transactions for block proposers to include. Validators would withhold votes from blocks that fail to satisfy the lists.

The proposals address proof verification and transaction inclusion, and could let networks verify more work without putting every underlying proof on-chain. Both remain drafts, and their implementation timelines and real-world performance remain uncertain.

Buterin has also described Ethereum as a longer-term cryptographic computing system, a direction explored in earlier coverage of his vision for the network.
