A Russian national was extradited from Japan to Germany on Oct. 2 in a case involving a Bitcoin ransom demand of about $165,000.

Investigators allege that the 28-year-old intruded into a German logistics company’s systems in September 2024, encrypted its data and demanded Bitcoin (BTC) worth about $165,000. Investigators also allege that he received a percentage of ransom payments collected by affiliate teams.

Japanese police detained the man in late May while he was traveling in Osaka. The Tokyo High Court ruled that conditions for his extradition to Germany were met.

Qilin uses a ransomware-as-a-service model. The group claimed responsibility in 2025 for a cyberattack on Japan’s Asahi Group.
