The XRP Ledger’s Smart Escrow proposal would let custom code set additional release conditions for escrowed assets, expanding the network’s existing time-based and cryptographic options while remaining in development.

The XLS-100 proposal describes using WebAssembly code to check whether an escrow can be completed. Potential conditions include notary approvals, compliance requirements and data from oracles.

The proposal restricts how the code could interact with the ledger. It calls for limits on resource use and allows code to read ledger objects, while restricting writes to the escrow’s own data field. An escrow containing bytecode would also need a CancelAfter field.

SmartEscrow remains listed as in development, and no mainnet activation date is established. The proposal remains a draft for programmable escrow conditions.
