Sui Reports 40.6 Million TPS in Offchain Tunnel Stress Test

The Oct. 7 demonstration used tunnels that process repeated activity offchain, with openings and closings settling on Sui mainnet.

Sui reported peak throughput of 40,614,180 transactions per second during an Oct. 7 live stress test in Singapore, highlighting an offchain design aimed at machine-to-machine commerce and AI agents.

The demonstration took place at the Sui Basecamp event and used programmable tunnels. These channels allow repeated interactions to take place away from the base layer, with the tunnel’s opening and closing activity settling on Sui mainnet.

More than 10,000 tunnels were opened on Sui mainnet within seconds during the test. The reported throughput therefore does not represent 40 million conventional transactions processed directly by Sui validators.

The result exceeded Sui’s reported peak of 6,086,766 transactions per second during a July 4 experiment involving AI agents and users across games, payments and chat. That earlier activity also used tunnel-based processing away from the base layer.

Adeniyi Abiodun, chief product officer and co-founder of Mysten Labs, said, “In an agentic economy, Sui doesn’t need to process every interaction. It needs to be the trust layer for all of them.”

Abiodun added, “No market in the world needs 6 million transactions per second, let alone 40 million: people just don’t move that fast. Agents do.”

CertiK was designated as the independent auditor for the Oct. 7 test. The review is expected to examine execution evidence and a cryptographic transcript of the activity.
