Mistral Previews 1 Trillion-Parameter Large 4 AI Model
The open-weight system targets coding, cyberdefense, finance and other specialized work, with weights planned after safety testing.

Mistral is previewing a 1 trillion-parameter artificial intelligence model for specialized business tasks, positioning the system as an open-weight alternative to leading proprietary models.
Mistral Large 4, nicknamed “Le Chonk,” is designed for coding, cyberdefense, manufacturing, finance and electrical engineering. The company plans to make its weights available after safety testing and release the final version by the end of October.
Large 4 was trained from scratch. Mistral describes it as the most capable open-weight model developed outside China. The company says the system is “very, very close” to some proprietary models, though performance against other models has not yet been established.
“Mistral is still in the race of getting the best model,” Mistral co-founder and chief scientist Guillaume Lample said. “This is the main message.”
The preview follows Mistral’s Oct. 6 release announcement for Large 4, which introduced the model for finance and other specialized applications. The weights will remain unavailable during safety testing before a broader release.
Mistral sells access to its models through pay-as-you-go cloud services and provides engineering support for customers customizing the systems. Lample said businesses that rely on closed models face the risk that access could be withdrawn.
“If you use a closed model, there is no guarantee it will still be there tomorrow,” Lample said.
