Solana has announced the Alpenglow Migration Deepdive, highlighting a planned consensus upgrade designed to reduce transaction finality while preserving the network’s existing application environment.

Alpenglow targets finality of 100 to 150 milliseconds, compared with about 12.8 seconds under Solana’s TowerBFT consensus system. In this context, finality means the network considers a transaction irreversible.

The upgrade is limited to Solana’s consensus layer. The Solana Virtual Machine, transaction format, programs and fees will remain unchanged, so the application environment does not require a broad migration.

Earlier testnet and devnet activations have advanced testing of the upgrade. Previous Alpenglow testnet coverage described the initial transition and its effect on validator voting.

Alpenglow’s first phase, Votor, replaces TowerBFT voting with direct validator votes and aggregate certificates. A later phase, Rotor, is planned to replace Solana’s Turbine block-propagation system.

The Alpenglow Migration Deepdive is intended to highlight the upgrade’s technological advancements and strategic initiatives. Solana has not provided a confirmed date for activating Alpenglow on its mainnet.
