A 35-day sample of x402 payments on Base and Solana recorded about 6.4 million transactions totaling $119,900, but the figures do not establish real commercial demand from AI agents.

Payments worth less than 1 cent accounted for 90.8% of the transactions. The sample’s small total value and high share of sub-cent payments show that transaction volume alone may not reflect the scale of economic activity.

Solana accounted for 94.5% of all transactions. Activity was particularly concentrated on Aug. 26, when 145 addresses sent about 1.28 million payments to three recipient addresses.

The sample also included a review of 19 AI products and workflows. Fourteen remained subject to permissions set by humans, and none could independently define its own objectives.

The findings point to a distinction between automated payment activity and demonstrated commercial demand. A large number of machine-initiated transactions can result from a small group of addresses and very low-value payments, without showing that AI agents are independently conducting broader commerce.
