Algorand Adds Falcon-1024 Accounts as Herkelrath Becomes CEO
The August upgrade improves resistance to quantum attacks while leaving consensus cryptography and other protections under development.

Algorand activated native Falcon-1024 accounts in August as part of a protocol upgrade designed to improve resistance to quantum attacks, while William Herkelrath took over as CEO amid a push for broader institutional adoption.
The v5.0.0 upgrade, published Aug. 13, added accounts based on Falcon-1024 signatures without requiring a LogicSig wrapper. The accounts are supported by Algorand’s AlgoKit and Pera Wallet software development kits.
The upgrade also introduced resource-based fees and expanded smart-contract capacity. Falcon-1024 is a post-quantum digital-signature system intended to help protect accounts against sufficiently capable quantum computers.
Algorand’s quantum-resistance work is not complete. The network’s consensus process still relies on elliptic-curve cryptography, while quantum-resistant verification, consensus signatures and native quantum-resistant multisignature support remain under development.
The leadership transition took effect Aug. 31, when Herkelrath succeeded Staci Warden after nearly five years. Algorand announced the change Sept. 9. Herkelrath previously held leadership roles at Chainlink and Curv, served as a Chainlink Labs executive and co-founded K3 Labs.
“I joined Algorand because they are a leader in decentralized post-quantum cryptography,” Herkelrath said.
The leadership change came as Algorand pursued broader institutional adoption and positioned its security work around digital-asset and cybersecurity infrastructure. Rebecca Rettig and Michael Mosier left the board, while Herkelrath and Alex Fowler joined it.
ALGO’s Sept. 29 closing price varied across market datasets. One listed a close of $0.125475, while another recorded a $0.12795 close, a $0.13318 open, a $0.14067 high and $5.15 million in volume for the day.
The differing closes reflect separate datasets and methodologies rather than a single consistent market reading. The technical upgrade and leadership transition remain the central developments for Algorand as work continues on broader quantum-resistant infrastructure.
