Oleg Fomenko has released frost-wallet, an open-source Bitcoin (BTC) wallet designed to let participants create and authorize Taproot transactions without relying on an online service or a single holder of the complete private key.

The project is packaged as a standalone HTML file intended to operate without a server, cloud account or internet connection. It uses ChillDKG for distributed key generation and FROST-style signing for Taproot transactions.

The wallet supports t-of-n arrangements, allowing a required threshold of participants to authorize a transaction. The complete private key is not held by any one participant. Coordination data can be exchanged through QR codes, plain text or files, supporting workflows on air-gapped devices.

The implementation was written in Rust, compiled to WebAssembly and packaged with JavaScript into a browser-readable file. It also supports Partially Signed Bitcoin Transactions for key-path Taproot spending.

No formal security audit was identified for the wallet, its ChillDKG Rust library or the related specifications. The project should therefore be treated as experimental software for developers and technically sophisticated Bitcoin users testing offline custody and threshold signing.

The ChillDKG proposal is marked “Draft” and lists version 0.3.0-dev. Its design allows any threshold from one participant through the full group, represented as 1 <= t <= n, rather than requiring a majority.

The specification also warns that a faulty participant can cause a key-generation session to fail. Its reference Python implementation is described as slow and vulnerable to side-channel attacks, with use intended for testing.

ChillDKG serves as the key-generation component for FROST Schnorr threshold signatures. Because the proposal and related FROST Bitcoin specifications remain drafts, their designs may change as development continues.
