OpenAI banned an Iran-origin cluster of ChatGPT accounts after identifying an influence operation that used fabricated journalist identities to place nearly 100 articles across more than a dozen online publications.

The campaign, called “Bogus Bylines,” used seven fake bylines and produced material in Persian and English. Its articles focused mainly on geopolitics surrounding the U.S.-Iran conflict, with publishing activity increasing after the conflict began.

The operators used ChatGPT to refine English-language articles, evaluate drafts against submission requirements, prepare pitches, generate social-media comments and polish internal reports. The earliest identified article appeared in July 2025, while the latest appeared in October 2026.

OpenAI classified the article-placement effort as Category 4 on its six-level influence-operation scale. Related social-media commenting was classified as Category 2. One publication carrying the material had nearly 2 million Facebook followers, almost 355,000 followers on X and more than 544,000 Instagram followers as of August 2026.

The activity appeared consistent with a commercial, for-hire influence campaign, but OpenAI did not identify the actor or confirm government involvement. OpenAI’s announcement was dated Oct. 8, 2026.
