Starknet is weighing a move from Ethereum’s Layer 2 ecosystem to an independent Layer 1 blockchain, a change intended to give the network more control over cryptographic upgrades as it targets quantum resistance by 2027.

“ We are actively considering becoming an L1,” Starknet said Oct. 8, adding that the goal would be to become the first fully quantum-resistant network. No governance vote, transition decision or launch schedule has been announced.

The proposal coincided with a sharp rally in Starknet (STRK). The token traded at $0.07049, up 22.92% over 24 hours, with a market capitalization of $523.24 million and $406.94 million in 24-hour volume.

StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson also raised the possibility of “Starknet becoming an L1 for post-quantum agility.” An independent Layer 1 would give Starknet direct control over consensus and future security upgrades, but would also move key security responsibilities away from Ethereum.

Starknet currently operates as an Ethereum validity rollup using STARK proofs. Its quantum-resistance roadmap identifies Ethereum-dependent bridge messaging and data availability as remaining challenges.
