Solana Activates 200-Millisecond Slots After September SOL Rally

The Oct. 9 upgrade cut target slot time from 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds, while its effect on October activity and prices remains unmeasured.

Solana (SOL) activated a 200-millisecond target slot time on Oct. 9, completing a staged network upgrade after the token rose 14.58% between the displayed Sept. 1 and Sept. 30 price endpoints.

The final reduction took effect at about 10:35 a.m. ET (14:35 UTC), when epoch 1053 began. The upgrade reduced target slot time from 400 milliseconds through four stages — 350, 300, 250 and 200 milliseconds.

SOL rose from $103.02 at the Sept. 1 opening to $118.04 at the Sept. 30 close. The calculation uses the displayed endpoints, and the price-history rows cover completed UTC days.

The upgrade changes how frequently Solana targets new slots. It does not establish that the network will process twice as much useful application activity or that the faster timing caused September’s price increase. Its potential effect on October demand, fees and SOL buying remains unmeasured.

Solana’s leader span remains four slots. That reduces the nominal leader-control window from 1.6 seconds at the former 400-millisecond target to 800 milliseconds at the new setting. The blockhash expiration window remains 150 blocks but now covers about 30 seconds in wall-clock time, down from about 60 seconds.

The design also proportionally reduces several per-slot work limits while keeping the epoch length at 432,000 slots. Faster confirmations may support trading and tokenized securities, while market makers may be able to quote tighter spreads.

Post-activation analysis found that skip rates remained stable during the staged rollout. Vote latency increased, with nodes in Asia and South America most affected.

No complete October performance window is available yet, leaving the upgrade’s market effect separate from the rally that preceded it.
