U.S. Software Job Postings Rebound, Led by Senior, AI-Titled Roles

Postings rose nearly 15% through June 2026 but remained 27.5% below February 2020 levels, with senior and AI-title roles driving the recovery.

U.S. software-development job postings rose nearly 15% from late February 2025 through June 2026, but the recovery favored senior and AI-title roles while remaining below pre-pandemic levels.

Overall job postings declined 7% during the same period. Software-development postings were still 27.5% below their February 2020 level as of June 2026, pointing to a selective recovery rather than a broad return to earlier hiring levels.

The composition of the rebound was heavily weighted toward experienced workers. Senior positions accounted for 71% of the increase between May 2025 and May 2026, while jobs with AI in the title represented 37% of the increase. Those categories overlap and should not be added together.

The labor-market shift was sharper among younger developers. Employment for software developers ages 22 to 25 fell nearly 20% from 2024, while employment among older developers increased. Among workers in that age group, employment in the most AI-exposed occupations fell roughly 16% relative to the least-exposed occupations through 2025 after controls for firm-type effects.

The shift comes as AI tools take on more routine coding tasks while increasing demand for developers who can evaluate generated code and manage software systems. The timing shows correlation, not proof that Claude Code or other AI tools caused the rebound.

AI-agent involvement reached roughly one-third of pull requests on Oct. 7, up from less than 10% a year earlier. If that pace continues, AI agents could write most code pushed to GitHub within two years, with some of that code never fully reviewed by a human.

Employment in software-development occupations is forecast to reach 1,892,600 jobs in 2035, up from 1,717,800 in 2025, a 10% gain. An average of 106,100 annual openings is projected for software developers, quality-assurance analysts and testers during that period.

The trend follows a wider expansion of AI-assisted engineering workflows, including AI coding agents’ impact on software-development activity.
