A user identified as @0xJohannes said a Ledger hardware wallet bought from an official European distributor contained an unauthorized internal device, raising concerns about possible physical tampering before sale.

@0xJohannes said the wallet, bought several weeks earlier, contained wiring not found in genuine Ledger hardware. The component was described as a suspected older version of a spy implant, while newer versions typically conceal parts behind the device’s screen.

No funds had been stolen from the affected wallet when the finding was disclosed. The same post said suspected cases had also been reported in Asia, South America and Europe.

The incident also highlights a limitation in Ledger’s Genuine Check. If the wallet’s original security element remains intact, the software check may not detect unauthorized physical modifications made to the device.
