MediaMarktSaturn has removed all Ledger hardware wallets from its stores and online platform after multiple reports of suspected device tampering raised concerns about the security of users’ recovery phrases.

The retailer’s parent company said it is contacting Ledger and is treating the matter seriously. Johannes, an X user, said two Ledger wallets purchased at separate MediaMarkt locations contained unauthorized cables and cellular modules.

Ledger said implants of that type could transmit a wallet’s recovery phrase over a cellular network. The company is investigating reports beyond the CryptoBilis case, in which tampered devices were identified among products sold by a Southeast Asian distributor.

Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès also said a Ledger Flex he purchased at Singapore’s airport contained a spyware implant. Ledger directed users to its latest CryptoBilis investigation update but did not directly address the Singapore claim or confirm that tampered devices had been found in Europe.

The retailer’s product removal and Ledger’s investigation remain ongoing.
