MetaMask Begins Precautionary Ethereum Validator Exits

The exits followed a Sept. 30 infrastructure incident. Returning the funds to staking could take up to 45 days, while the direct diversion identified so far was 0.36 ETH.

MetaMask began precautionary exits of Ethereum validators after disclosing a Sept. 30 infrastructure incident, placing 565,056 Ether (ETH) into a staking process that can take weeks to complete.

An on-chain tally counted 16,965 validators as exited or waiting in Ethereum’s exit queue at 1:29 a.m. ET (05:29 UTC) on Oct. 1. The same analysis identified 0.36 ETH in diverted block tips from 18 blocks and no slashed validators in its dataset.

MetaMask said the incident affected part of its infrastructure, that its staking operations are non-custodial and that it had found “no immediate threat to MetaMask wallets.”

Lido said the affected validators were expected to leave Ethereum’s active validator set by the end of Oct. 7, though that would not necessarily mean the ETH had been fully withdrawn. Returning the funds to staking could take up to 45 days because Ethereum limits how quickly validators can enter the active set.

A roughly $5.04 billion figure combines the affected ETH with a separate 1,398,922-ETH entry backlog and values the total at $2,564.19 per ETH. The calculation assumes all of the ETH returns to staking and represents a scenario, not confirmed network exposure or realized loss.
