x402 Payments on Base Cover AI Inference, Data and Code Reviews

Base recorded more than 138 million x402 transactions in the 12 months through July 1, 2026, but the figure does not establish how many distinct customers or agents used the protocol.

Base processed more than 138 million transactions through Coinbase’s x402 payment protocol in the 12 months ending July 1, 2026, with uses spanning AI inference, code reviews and other online services.

Recorded categories included financial intelligence, data and search API calls, agent frameworks and tools, payment and settlement rails, gaming, token issuance and gambling. The mix spans information services and other online activity, and does not mean every transaction involved an AI agent.

The 138 million figure is a count of protocol transactions. It does not establish how many distinct customers or agents made payments, or whether each payment completed a useful task. x402 also supports apps and scripts.

Coinbase introduced x402 in May 2025, using HTTP’s 402 Payment Required response to let a server request payment before returning an API resource. A client can send payment authorization, and a facilitator verifies and settles the payment onchain before the server provides the resource. The protocol can carry payment through a web request while serving software clients beyond AI agents.

The tally adds context to prior coverage of x402 payment growth and wallet activity on Base. Early activity also included PING, a meme coin mint that drew one-off wallets before participation faded.

Payments were often small in a separate 16-month sample ending in Sept. 2026: more than 87% were between $0.0001 and $0.10, with $0.01 to $0.10 the most common range. That sample extends beyond the July 1 cutoff for the 138 million transaction count, so its payment-size shares do not describe the full 12-month total.

A separate analysis of Base settlements over 280 days counted 136,708,672 transactions worth $44,121,383.81. It classified 21.20% as fictitious under its criteria, a category described as self-payments or closed-loop settlements; 63.78% were transfers within linked clusters, and 15.02% were unattributed. Transfers within linked clusters do not establish shared control of the wallets or deliberate wash trading. This analysis used a different window and classification method from the 12-month x402 transaction count.

Will Su, BlackRock’s head of digital assets research, said the firm was watching agentic commerce closely, “with AI agents potentially creating meaningful demand for frequent, low-value payments around the clock.”
