A 22-year-old Sacramento man told investigators he fell asleep while using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) feature, known as FSD, before his car struck a patrol vehicle, seriously injuring two California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers.

The collision happened shortly before midnight Tuesday, Oct. 13, near Fairfield, California — about 2:45 a.m. ET (06:45 UTC) on Oct. 14. Dashcam footage shows the Tesla entering a four-lane closure on eastbound Interstate 80, passing flares, cones and emergency lights before striking the rear of a Dodge Charger patrol car.

The two officers inside suffered serious injuries. Investigators planned to download the Tesla’s vehicle data and onboard footage to determine how the crash unfolded.

FSD is a Level 2 driver-assistance system that requires drivers to keep monitoring the vehicle. The feature does not make the car autonomous. The naming issue has also surfaced in Europe, where Tesla offered to rename the feature on some websites amid scrutiny over how its name describes the driver’s role.
