Schwartz Says SecuX App Pushed Phishing Alert as Wallet Access Problems Persist

Schwartz said the Android alert linked to a page requesting a 12- or 24-word recovery phrase. Users continued to report access problems after SecuX said service had been restored.

Ripple’s former CTO David “JoelKatz” Schwartz said SecuX’s Android app sent him an alert linking to a page that solicited a recovery phrase; SecuX users reported wallet access problems on Oct. 17.

The page requested either 12 or 24 words, Schwartz said, and he identified the alert as a scam.

SecuX, a hardware wallet maker, announced on Oct. 16 that the app was undergoing a broad system upgrade and urgent maintenance. Later that afternoon, the company said service had returned to normal.

Schwartz disclosed the notification later that evening. By Oct. 17, multiple users still said they could not access wallets and that the service remained unavailable.

SecuX gave no explanation for the disruption and reiterated that it would never ask users for a recovery phrase. The episode combined two concerns for SecuX customers: ongoing access complaints and an in-app notice that, Schwartz said, led to a page seeking the phrase.
