Algorand Says Mainnet Has Passed More Than 2.7 Million Post-Quantum Transactions

Algorand said Saturday, Oct. 17, that its mainnet had processed more than 2.7 million transactions with post-quantum signatures, while parts of consensus still rely on classical cryptography as the network works toward broader quantum resilience.

The count refers to transactions signed with post-quantum technology. Algorand had reported crossing 1 million such transactions on Sept. 17, with commemorative Falcon-signed NFTs accounting for a significant share of that earlier activity.

Native Falcon-1024 accounts went live on Algorand’s mainnet in Aug. 2026, allowing users to authorize transactions with post-quantum signatures. The feature is supported through SDKs, AlgoKit and Pera Wallet. Falcon-1024 is the only post-quantum scheme currently enabled for this account feature.

Algorand also uses Falcon signatures for State Proofs, introduced in 2022 to attest to ledger state every 256 rounds. Those proofs serve a different purpose from signatures that authorize transactions from user accounts.

Consensus remains a separate area of work. Its verifiable random function relies on elliptic-curve cryptography, and consensus signing operations use Ed25519. The transaction count therefore reflects use of account signing, not post-quantum protection across every part of the network.

Algorand’s security roadmap targets broader quantum resilience by the end of 2027. It includes post-quantum multisignature support and research into protections for consensus.
